Setting up a custom domain

Last updated on

With a custom domain, teachers and students reach your workspace at your school's own address, such as examplary.example.edu, instead of app.examplary.ai. An admin enters the domain under Account settings → Sign-in & domains and adds one CNAME record at your DNS provider. Examplary then sets up the domain and its certificate.

Available plans

Custom domains are available on the Organization plan. Only admins and owners can set one up.

Set up your domain

  1. Go to Account settings and, under Advanced, open Sign-in & domains.
  2. Under Custom domain, enter the address you want to use, for example examplary.example.edu, and click Configure domain.
  3. Examplary shows the DNS record to add: a CNAME record for your domain that points to custom-domains.examplary.ai. Add it at your DNS provider, or ask your IT department to.
  4. Back in Examplary, click Verify domain.

The domain then shows Pending DNS verification until Examplary finds your record, Provisioning domain while it sets up the domain and its certificate, and Active once everything works. While you have the page open, Examplary checks the status every 15 seconds.

What changes once it's active

Everyone can now open your workspace at your own address, and signing in works there the same way, single sign-on included. The links Examplary sends, such as invitations and test links, use your domain from then on.

If your school filters web traffic, make sure the new domain is let through. See Allowlisting Examplary on your network.

Remove the domain

Click the bin icon next to the domain and confirm with Remove domain. Your workspace is then only reachable at app.examplary.ai again.

Troubleshooting

It stays on Pending DNS verification. DNS changes can take a few hours to reach every server. Check that the CNAME record points to custom-domains.examplary.ai, wait a while, and click the refresh button next to the status. Some DNS providers only want the part before your own domain as the hostname, such as examplary.

It stays on Provisioning domain. Setting up the certificate can take a while once your record is found. If the status hasn't changed after 24 hours, contact us at hi@examplary.ai.

I get "Invalid custom domain". Enter only the address, such as examplary.example.edu, without https:// or a path. Addresses ending in .examplary.ai can't be used.

I get "This domain is already in use by another organization". A domain can belong to only one workspace. Contact us at hi@examplary.ai if that doesn't seem right.
