In Examplary, you set how points become a grade for each test under Settings → Grading & feedback: points, a percentage, labels, or a grade out of 10, optionally with an N-term or pass mark. With a grade out of 10, you see straight away how many graded students pass, so you can adjust the scale before publishing.
The grade is calculated from the points given during grading. For open questions, those start as an AI suggestion that you review; AI grading shows how that works.
Where to set it
Open the test and go to Settings → Grading & feedback → Grading scheme. You choose it per test, and a new test starts on Points. If you copy a test, the setting comes along. Changes save automatically.
| Scheme | What the result looks like |
|---|---|
| Points | 12 / 16 |
| Percentages | 75% |
| Out of 10 | A grade on a 10-point scale, like 7.5 |
| Letter grades, Pass/fail, Proficiency or Custom labels... | A label for each range of percentages |
Calculating a grade out of 10
Choose Out of 10. Under Grade calculation, you decide how the grade is worked out:
| Calculation | How it works |
|---|---|
| Percentage divided by 10 (the default) | The percentage of points divided by 10. Zero points is a 0.0. |
| N-term | The formula the CvTE uses for Dutch national exams: 9 × score + N, from 1.0 to 10.0. An N-term of 1.0 gives a 5.5 for half the points. You pick an N-term between 0 and 3. |
| Pass mark | You choose the percentage of points that earns a 5.5, 55% by default. Below it, grades run down to 1.0; above it, up to 10.0. |
A few examples:
| Setting | Score | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| N-term 1.0 | 50% | 5.5 |
| N-term 1.5 | 50% | 6.0 |
| N-term 0.5 | 50% | 5.0 |
| Pass mark 60% | 30% | 3.3 |
| Pass mark 60% | 80% | 7.8 |
Grades are rounded to one decimal.
Seeing how many students pass
As soon as some students are fully graded, you'll see below the calculation how many of them pass, for example 18 of 26 students get a passing grade (69%). A pass is a 5.5 or higher.
That number changes as soon as you pick another calculation, N-term or pass mark. If a test turned out harder than you meant it to be, you can see what a higher N-term or a lower pass mark would do. Students who aren't fully graded yet don't count.
Labels instead of a grade
With Letter grades, Pass/fail, Proficiency or Custom labels..., every student gets a label. You set a Starting percentage for each label and add labels with Add range. With Pass/fail, for example, Pass starts at 60%. Change the percentages to suit your test. The first label always starts at 0%.
Changing the calculation later
You can change the grade calculation at any time, even after grading. Examplary recalculates the grade everywhere: in your overview, in the export and for your students.
If you've already published the results, your students see the changed grade straight away.
If you switch to another scheme, say from Out of 10 to Percentages and back, the calculation starts over at Percentage divided by 10.
Where the grade shows up
- In Grade test, in the Students view, once all of a student's answers are graded.
- In Statistics, under Grades distribution. See Viewing test results and statistics.
- In the spreadsheet you download.
- For your students, when you publish the results and Show final grade is on.
Troubleshooting
I don't see Grade calculation. It's only there with Out of 10.
I don't see how many students pass. That only appears once at least one student is fully graded, and only with Out of 10.
A student doesn't have a grade yet. Not all of their answers have been graded. Until they are, you'll see a progress bar.
My labels aren't being saved. As long as Grading scheme ranges should not overlap is showing, Examplary doesn't save anything. Adjust the starting percentages until the message goes away.
