On the Grade test tab, you go through your students' answers by question or by student. Most open answers already have a suggestion from the AI, which you accept or change. Then you publish the results: students get an email and see their points and feedback online.
That's how you keep the final say with AI grading. How AI-assisted grading works in Examplary explains where the suggestions come from.
Grading by question or by student
Open the test and go to Grade test. At the top, choose how you want to work:
- Questions (the default): you grade one question for every student. That keeps your grading consistent, with one rubric in your head.
- Students: you grade all of one student's answers. You see their work as a whole, and this is where you write overall feedback.
- Statistics: how the class did on each question. See Viewing test results and statistics.
Click Review next to a question or student that isn't finished yet.
Reviewing an answer
Click an answer. You'll recognize an AI suggestion by its dashed lines. On the right are the Scoring criteria, with the AI's choice for each criterion and a percentage for how confident it is. Hover over the percentage to read its reasoning.
- If the suggestion is right, click Accept suggestion.
- If it isn't, change it in the criteria: turn a criterion on or off, or pick a different level in an analytical rubric. Or use Correct, Partially correct (half the points) or Incorrect, or type the number of points yourself.
- Edit the student's feedback in the Feedback field. That also marks the answer as graded, with the points it has at that moment.
Everything saves automatically. The criteria only show on a large screen; on a tablet or phone you get just the buttons and the points.
Accepting all suggestions at once
Once you've looked at the suggestions for a question or student, choose Accept all suggestions in the three-dot menu. To do it for every student at once, go to the Students view, open the command palette with Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac) and choose Accept all AI suggestions. If you've filtered the list, it only applies to the students in it.
An accepted suggestion counts as your own grading, and the AI uses it as an example for later answers to the same question.
Filtering and hiding names
With the filter icon, you can show only the students marked Needs review, only those marked Graded, or one group. Under Display options, you turn Show grades, Show student names and Needs review only on or off.
To grade without seeing whose answer it is, turn off Show student names. Names are then blurred. The choice applies to all your tests until you turn it back on.
Giving overall feedback and comments
In the Students view, open a student. Under Student feedback, you write feedback on the whole test. Or click Generate suggestion: the AI then suggests feedback for you to edit. This box is there when Provide overall feedback is on in the test settings, which it is by default.
With the speech bubble next to an answer (Add comment), you leave a comment on that answer. Comments are visible to the student by default. Turn that off for a note to yourself or a colleague.
Publishing results
Once everything is reviewed, you'll see at the top: You've reviewed everything! Share the results with your students.
- Click Publish results.
- Leave Invite students to view results and feedback on. Students with an account then get an email with a link.
- Click Publish.
What students get to see is set in Settings → Results review: the final grade, the points per question, the feedback and the comments. Everything is on by default. Students see their answers, points and feedback, but not the rubric or the model answer. The final grade only appears once every answer is graded.
The options only appear when Show results to students in their dashboard is on. From that moment, students can see their results, even without an email. So only turn it on once you've finished grading.
Students who took the test without an account don't get an email and can't see anything online. Link their result to their account first, through the menu next to the student → Link to student account.
You can also publish before everything is reviewed, with Share with students... in the export menu. Students then see the AI suggestions you haven't looked at yet, as if they were final.
Hiding results again
There's no button to undo publishing. In Results review, turn off Show results to students in their dashboard. That doesn't take back emails already sent. If you publish again later, only students who haven't had an email yet get one.
Troubleshooting
I don't see the Publish results button. Something still needs grading. Filter on Needs review to see what's left.
A student didn't get an email. Their result isn't linked to an account. Use Link to student account and publish again.
An answer is stuck on 'Auto-grading…'. Grade it yourself.
I don't see the scoring criteria. They only appear on a wide screen. Make the window bigger.
