With Muute turned on, you can require students to take a test in the Muute app, which locks down their device while they work. An admin turns Muute on once, without entering any credentials. Teachers then turn on Require the use of Muute for each test that needs it, and can add the access code of a Muute room.
Muute is one of three secure exam apps you can use when you deliver tests online with Examplary. Students can take a Muute test with or without an Examplary account.
You need a Muute account for your school, with a room set up using the Examplary configuration. Muute works on every Examplary plan. Only admins and owners can turn it on; after that, every teacher can use it for their own tests.
Turn on Muute for your workspace
An admin or owner does this once for the whole workspace:
- Go to Account settings and, under Workspace, open Integrations.
- Click Enable on the Muute card.
- Click Enable again to confirm.
There's nothing to fill in. You see Integration saved, and the card shows Enabled.
Set up a room in Muute
Students enter the Muute app through a room. If you don't have one yet, create a room in Muute with the Examplary configuration and note its access code.
You don't need a new room for each test, even though the text under the setting in Examplary mentions a room for this test. Muute opens Examplary, and Examplary then takes the student to the test whose link they started from. So one room works for all your tests, as long as students open the test link first and click Open in muute there. A student who opens the room straight from the Muute app lands in Examplary, but not on the test.
Require Muute for a test
- Open the test and go to Settings → Online assessment.
- Under Security, turn on Require the use of Muute.
- Optionally, paste the room's access code into Access code (optional).
Changes save automatically. With the access code filled in, students don't have to type it themselves when Muute opens. Leave it empty if you'd rather hand out the code yourself, for example at the start of the test.
A test can require only one secure browser at a time. If Safe Exam Browser or Schoolyear is on for the test, turn it off first to see the Muute option.
Share the test with your students
Share the test as you normally would, for example with a link or by inviting your class. See Sharing a test with your students. Before the test, ask students to install the Muute app on their devices.
If a student is signed in to Examplary, Examplary passes their name on to Muute and keeps them signed in inside the app.
What students see
- The student opens the test in a normal browser and sees Open in Muute.
- They click the dark Open in muute button.
- Muute opens the app, or asks them to install it first.
- Inside Muute, the student lands on the same test in Examplary and starts it there.
Starting the test outside Muute doesn't work. Examplary also checks every request during the test, so a session can't be moved out of the app halfway through.
Turn Muute off
To stop requiring Muute for a test, turn off Require the use of Muute in the test settings. Students can then take the test in a normal browser again.
When an admin removes Muute from the workspace, under Integrations with Manage and Remove, Examplary stops requiring Muute for every test in the workspace.
Troubleshooting
I can't find Integrations. Only admins and owners see it under Account settings. Ask an admin in your workspace to turn Muute on, or email hi@examplary.ai.
I don't see Require the use of Muute. Check that the Muute card shows Enabled under Integrations. If Safe Exam Browser or Schoolyear is already required for this test, turn that off first: a test can require only one secure browser.
Nothing happens when a student clicks Open in muute. The button opens Muute's launch page in a new tab, which then starts the app. Check that the browser allows that tab, and that the school network allows app.muute.com. See Allowlisting Examplary on your network.
A student is asked for an access code. Fill in the room's access code in the test settings, so students don't have to, or give them the code yourself.
Muute opens, but not on the right test. Ask the student to close Muute, open the test link again in their normal browser, and click Open in muute again. Examplary then opens the test the student came from.
A student can't start the test. They're probably in a normal browser. Ask them to open the test link and click Open in muute.
