Muute is a secure exam app that locks down a student's device while they take a test. When Muute is connected to Examplary, teachers can require students to take a test inside the Muute app before they can start.
This guide explains how organization admins connect Muute, how teachers enable it for a test, and what students see when they take the test.
You need a Muute account for your school, with a room set up using the Examplary configuration.
Connect Muute to your organization
An organization admin or owner only needs to connect Muute once. There are no credentials to enter.
- Go to Account → Integrations
- Select Muute
- Click Connect
When the setup succeeds, the Muute card shows Connected.
Enable Muute for a test
After Muute is connected, teachers can enable it per test. Students need a Muute room to enter the app. Muute has a ready-made Examplary configuration, so you don't need a separate room for each test: one room can serve all your Examplary tests.
If you don't have a room yet, create one in Muute using the Examplary configuration, and note its access code.
Then enable Muute in Examplary:
- Open the test in Examplary
- Open Settings
- In the security section, enable Require the use of Muute
- Optionally, paste the room's access code
- Save the test settings
When you fill in the access code, students don't have to type it themselves when Muute opens. Leave it empty if you'd rather hand out the code separately, for example at the start of the exam.
A test can require only one secure browser at a time. If Safe Exam Browser or Schoolyear is enabled for the test, turn it off first to see the Muute option.
Share the test with students
Share the test link with your students as you normally would. Before the test starts, ask them to install the Muute app on their devices.
Students can take a Muute test with or without an Examplary account. If they are signed in, Examplary passes their name on to Muute and keeps them signed in inside the app.
What students see
When a student opens a Muute-protected test in a normal browser, Examplary asks them to continue in Muute.
The normal flow is:
- The student opens the Examplary test link
- The student clicks the Open in muute button
- Muute opens the app, or asks the student to install it first
- Inside Muute, the student lands back on the same test in Examplary
- The student starts the test from inside the Muute app
If a student tries to start the test outside Muute, Examplary blocks the attempt and asks them to open the test in Muute. Examplary also checks every request during the test, so a session can't be moved out of the app halfway through.
Turn off Muute for a test
To stop requiring Muute for a test, return to the test settings and disable Require the use of Muute. Students can then take the test in a normal browser again.
If an admin removes the Muute integration from the organization, Examplary stops requiring Muute for all tests in the organization.
Troubleshooting
I cannot find Integrations
Only organization admins and owners can configure integrations. If you are an admin or owner and still do not see Integrations, contact Examplary support.
I cannot find the Muute option in the test settings
Check that Muute shows Connected under Account → Integrations. Also check that Safe Exam Browser and Schoolyear are turned off for the test, since only one secure browser can be required at a time.
Nothing happens when a student clicks "Open in muute"
The button opens Muute in a new tab. Ask the student to allow pop-ups for Examplary, and make sure the
school network allows access to app.muute.com.
A student is asked for an access code
Enter the room's access code in the test settings so students don't have to, or share the code with your students directly.
Muute opens, but not on the right test
Ask the student to close Muute, go back to the test link in their normal browser, and click Open in muute again. Muute always opens the test the student came from.
A student cannot start the test
Ask them to open the test through the Open in muute button in Examplary. Starting the test in a normal browser is blocked for Muute-protected tests.
