Sharing a test with your students

Last updated on

You share a test with your students through Share → Publish as test or Publish as practice. Examplary then adjusts the settings for that purpose and immediately opens the window where you invite your class or get a link. After that, you can set when the test is open.

Delivering a test is the step between creating it and grading it. To see how the three fit together, read about how to create, deliver and grade tests with AI.

Publishing and sharing a test

  1. Click Share in the top right and choose Publish as test or Publish as practice.
  2. In the window that opens, Settings summary shows what applies now. To change anything, click Edit all settings.
  3. Under Access, choose who can take the test: invite your class, or choose Anyone with the link and copy the link.

You can change who has access later through Share → Manage access....

Test or practice test

Examplary sets things up for what you choose:

A practice test isn't the same as a practice space. In a practice test, students answer the same questions every time. A practice space writes new questions, tuned to what each student still finds hard. See Setting up your first practice space.

Choosing who can take the test

OptionWho can take the test
Only invited users (the default)Only the students and groups you invite
Anyone with the linkAnyone who has the link, even without an account
Everyone in my workspaceEveryone in your school's workspace
Invite your class right away

A new test is set to Only invited users. Invite your class in the window that opens after publishing, or choose Anyone with the link. Otherwise nobody can take the test yet.

Available plans

Everyone in my workspace is available on the Organization plan. Passcodes are available on the Teacher and Organization plans.

Choose Anyone with the link and click the link to copy it. Post it in your learning platform or put it on the board. Students without an account enter their name when they start.

Inviting your class

  1. In the Search or enter email... field, type a student's name or email address, or the name of a group.
  2. Leave the role on Participant.
  3. Click Invite.

You can do this in the window that opens after publishing, and later through Share → Manage access.... A student you invite individually gets an email with a link straight to the test. Inviting a group doesn't send emails: the students find the test on their home page in Examplary.

Inviting has an advantage: the results are tied to each student's account from the start. That lets students view their results online later, and they get an email when you publish them. With a link and no account, you link the results to students yourself afterwards, with Link to student account.

You invite colleagues in the same place, with the role Collaborator. See Working on tests with colleagues.

Setting when the test is open

Go to Settings → Online assessment. Under Security, you can set:

  • Start and end dates: students can only take the test between these two moments.
  • Enforce time limit: each student gets a fixed number of minutes, counting from when they start.
  • Require passcode: students can only start once they enter the code you give them in class.

There's no limit on attempts. A student who has handed in can start again from the link, and you'll see two submissions. To prevent that, close the test with an end date.

Everything about supervising an online test is in Monitoring students during online assessments.

What your students see

Students first see the test's introduction, with the number of questions and, if they're turned on, the time and points. Without an account, they enter their name, plus the passcode if you use one. Then they click Start test. After the last question, they hand in with Hand in.

In a practice test, they see their points and feedback right after each question. For open questions, these come straight from the AI, without you reviewing them first.

Students only see their results once you publish them. How that works, and what you show them, is in Reviewing answers and publishing results.

Closing a test

There's no button to withdraw a test. Set an end date, and the test gets the label Closed. Or set access back to Only invited users.

Troubleshooting

A student sees "Not allowed". They're signed in with an account that doesn't have access. Invite them, or choose Anyone with the link.

A student sees "Not yet available" or "No longer available". Check the Start and end dates.

The passcode isn't accepted. The code has to match exactly. Students then see the message Incorrect passcode.

I don't see Anyone with the link. Your workspace admin has turned off public sharing.
