You set up a practice space in two places. On the page itself you choose the question types, the topics and what the AI should pay attention to, and behind the gear icon you decide what students see while they practice: hints, points, feedback and their progress per topic. Everything saves automatically.
A new practice space works straight away as it is. These settings let you tailor its AI practice questions to your own class.
Choose question types and instructions
On the left of your practice space's page, you'll find:
- Question types: which question types the AI may use. By default, this is set to Let AI decide.
- Mastery topics: the topics your students practice. See Setting up your first practice space.
- Additional AI instructions: what the AI takes into account when it writes and picks questions and gives feedback, such as "Give step-by-step feedback on math questions".
- Notes for the student: a message students see under Teacher's notes, such as "This practice space will help you prepare for the chapter 2 test".
Under Additional AI instructions, Templates opens a list of ready-made instructions, such as Socratic tutor and Exam coach. A template replaces the text in the field. To keep your own text for later, use Save as template.
Open the settings
Click the gear icon to open the Practice space settings:
| Tab | What you set |
|---|---|
| General settings | The name, Language, Student level and Subject |
| Access & sharing | Who can open the practice space |
| Appearance | The Icon, the Color and what students see while they practice |
| Feedback | Whether students get feedback after every question, and the Grading and feedback AI instructions |
| Progression | Whether students see their progress per topic, and when they've mastered a topic |
| Source materials | Which source materials the practice space uses |
The language decides which language the questions and feedback are in, and which language students see the practice space in. The topics don't change along with it: click Regenerate topics for that.
Decide what students see while they practice
The Appearance tab has three switches:
| Setting | Default | What students notice |
|---|---|---|
| Show hints | On | Before they answer, they can look at a hint with Get a hint. |
| Show points per question | Off | They see how many points a question is worth, and how many they got. |
| Allow students to pick their own topics | On | They can type in what they'd like to practice. |
Set up the feedback
On the Feedback tab, Provide feedback per question decides whether students get feedback from the AI after every answer. It's on by default. The Grading and feedback AI instructions tell the AI how to look at answers and give feedback, for example which tone to use or what to focus on. There are templates here too, such as Constructive feedback and Concise feedback.
Set up progress and mastery
Show progress per topic decides whether students can see how they're doing on each topic. If you turn it off, students lose that whole overview, including the Practice this topic button.
With Show 'proficient' badge for topics, students get a check mark when they've mastered a topic. By default, that's 80% of the points on the last 10 questions, spread over 2 days of practice. You can change all three numbers here. Following student progress in a practice space explains how you follow progress as a teacher.
Good to know
- When you change the AI instructions, language, subject, source materials, topics or question types, Examplary writes new questions. That takes a few minutes.
- Students practice in rounds of seven questions, and can answer up to 100 questions a day in one practice space.
- You don't set a difficulty level. Examplary adjusts the difficulty for each student.
Troubleshooting
Why do students still get questions from before my change? Writing new questions takes a few minutes.
A student sees "Daily limit". They've reached today's maximum and can carry on tomorrow.
