The formula question type asks the student to answer with a mathematical expression, entered in a proper math input field. Students write real notation — fractions, exponents, roots, Greek letters — with the help of an on-screen keyboard.

When to use it

• Questions whose answer is an expression or equation: "Solve for x", "Differentiate f(x)".

• Physics and chemistry answers involving formulas or units.

• Any situation where plain-text math (1/2x^2) would be ambiguous or unreadable.

For multi-step working where you want to see the intermediate steps, use the math notebook question type instead.

How it works for students

The student clicks into the math field and types their expression; the field renders it as proper mathematical notation while they type. Common notation (fractions, powers, roots) can be entered from the keyboard. Plan for roughly 4 minutes per formula question.

Grading

Graded by AI with semantic comparison against the correct answer: equivalent expressions such as 2/4 and 1/2 are treated as the same answer in most cases, so students aren't penalised for an unsimplified but correct form unless your criteria say otherwise. You review and can adjust all suggested scores.
