    The math notebook question type gives students a notebook-style interface where they work through a problem line by line, in real mathematical notation, with the final line as their answer. It's built for "show your work" questions: you see the whole derivation, not just the result.

    When to use it

    • Multi-step algebra: solving equations, simplifying expressions, rewriting formulas.

    • Calculus and physics derivations where the route matters as much as the destination.

    • Any question where you want to award partial credit for correct intermediate steps.

    For questions where only the final expression matters, the simpler formula question type may be a better fit.

    How it works for students

    The student starts with a few empty lines (configurable) and adds steps as needed, each entered in a math input field that renders proper notation. The last line is treated as the final answer. Plan for roughly 6 minutes per question.

    Grading

    Graded by AI: both the final answer and the intermediate steps are considered against your scoring criteria, with semantic comparison of expressions (2/4 and 1/2 count as equivalent). This makes it easy to award partial credit for sound working with a slip at the end. You review and can adjust all suggested scores.
